My roommate brought some tacky posters of cities back with him yesterday (like the kind of things you see in show homes that nobody actually likes). I started feeling sick yesterday too. I look at the frames now and they’re all moldy. Would being exposed to mold in a confined space (dorm room) for that short a time really make me sick that fast? He’s in class now, should I move them into the hallway?

Define “sick”. What are your symptoms? Headaches? Runny nose? Watery eyes? Absolutely, the mold could be causing that.

YES.
You sure it’s not just dust?

Yup. My throat kinda hurts too.

Some people are more sensitive to mold than others, and will react to it more quickly. So, yes, it could be the mold.

They are dusty but one has splotches of mold along the top. Now that I’m looking at his side of the room I’m seeing a lot of his stuff has weird growths on it.
I think I’m going to leave the room.

Allergic reactions don’t take a very high concentration at all. In short, yes. If for no good reason he just HAS to keep them, one would need to vinegar the shit out of the frames or something similar to kill it off. Getting a filter going in the room may help clearing up whatever remains.

Absolutely mold can cause that.
I’d just shower his room in bleach and if he complains about the smell or the chemical burns, tell him to man up.

We share a room.

Are you in a dorm? If so, approach your RA about it as a health matter. See if you can get different roommate, or have him remove the posters. If it wasn’t happening earlier, then it’s a good chance that they are causing it. There’s a reason they list molds on the allergy report. Some people are more sensitive to them than others.

I’d say ask him if he can re-frame the posters first. Then air out the room really well, and you should be fine. You should probably go to a doctor or nurse or whatever if your condition worsens and it seems like you’re having an allergic reaction.

OK, so this requires one more step.
Seal off his side of the room with a heavy duty plastic tarp.
Then
shower it in bleach.

Reason #8000 I got a dorm with separate bedrooms

In a word, yes. If there is any ‘growth’ on the posters or anything for that matter you can become ill quite fast, more so if the air isn’t well ventilated. Vent the room by opening the window and let the air circulate and talk with your roommate. Show him/her evidence on the internet regarding mould spores.

Well regardless, he should get rid of the moldy stuff, but I wouldn't discount the possibility of being exposed to the human Petri dish that is a college dorm. Maybe you caught a bug.

Open the window, and talk to your room mate first. Don’t go straight to RA about it. If he doesn’t step up, then go right to the RA. you have a right to a safe/healthy environment, but don’t end around your room mate right away, that could make for an awkward scenario the remainder of the year.

Bleach them shits and then wipe them down. Tell him he’s made your living space a health hazard.
